Care Campaign for the Vulnerable receives worrying accounts from senior care workers telling of vulnerable residents suffering neglect. A care worker has identified herself to us but we have chosen not publicly name her

''I work in a care home and I have done for over three years now. I can’t begin to explain the neglect going on and I am shocked that not many health professionals are speaking out about this. The last ten months I have shared my concerns with many within the care inspectors in Scotland as well as company I work for and the manager. My concerns all fall on deaf ears. I have seen a few experiences of others speaking out but the media seem to label them as anti-vaxers or anti maskers. I have tried to “do my job” and put my personal feelings to one side but I can’t do it anymore.

There is very little understanding and compassion going on in most care homes and I have decided to resign from my job that I once loved because of this. Please ,please keep speaking out and being our most vulnerable voice as it’s needed more than ever especially now. What I witnessed at work yesterday was residents physically being dragged by nurses to have the COVID-19 vaccine.

One lady was eating her soup at the table in a wheelchair as she would normally do. She was pulled away from the table by a senior carer & told “The vaccine is finally here'' and she was going to quickly get it. The lady who is in her late 80's with early-onset dementia replied she didn’t want it as she has “never been right since the flu vaccine”. The senior carer continued down the hall replying “This will only take a few minutes then you can go back to your soup''! I cried in the toilets that day at work and can’t get the residents out of my mind.

The Coronavirus act 2020 and what laws it allows to be passed when it comes to the treatment of residents. Also, technology does not work for 90% of individuals especially those with dementia so ruling out broadband & video calls etc is useless. It doesn’t meet the basic needs of the residents. I can’t speak for every care home but I know that several do not offer enough nutritional foods & supplements to help boost immune systems. Medicine is handed out far too easy. I explain that I’m just sad for the residents who can’t have cuddles with their families at Christmas but sadly it goes much deeper.''

We understand this is a senior carer's account. CCFTV has been reassured concerns were raised with the care inspectors and authorities. This care worker is happy to speak publicly regarding these issues but can't be identified.
