 Care Campaign For The Vulnerable

Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is learning of the pressures faced by conscientious led Care Providers striving to offer a caring and safe environment to both service users and staff. Safety monitoring is proving to be a invaluable care assist tool - bringing a more open and transparent culture into care homes as well as saving valuable resources within the care home sector and the NHS

''My mother's unexplained fall in a care home was the beginning of the end....''

Added on 23rd May 2020

A daughter contacted CCFTV claiming her elderly mother suffered a series of unwitnessed falls in her care home and told Care Campaign for the Vulnerable because of these falls she believes it was a major factor in her mother's declining health.

''My mother’s unwitnessed fall was the beginning of the end. She had problems after a fall nine months earlier which resulted in a broken hip and a surgical repair. With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder whether a fall in hospital just two days after the surgery, resulting in all the problems she had subsequently. Mum had a lot of falls in her care home. She was on elevated pain medication which caused an overdose - again with her being blue-lighted to hospital. The number of times I had an early morning or late-night calls about "unwitnessed" falls were numerous. I suppose the home did their best but for £920 a week I expected better. Much better and safer care. I felt anger but so helpless until I began the high-level complaints process at the hospital. I haven’t even begun to address the shortfall in care with the care home.

''My mum's health worsened after this fall but all the failings together.. it was the beginning of the end''

My mother’s demise was the result of poor monitoring which resulted in digestive failure (blocked transverse colon). She took weeks to die. It was awful. The fall was the beginning, but there were so many contributory factors.

''This experience has taught me I will never go in to a care home'' I’m sure good care is happening but I am horrified at what happened to my mum and many others like her. That’s why safety monitoring must be introduced in the care of our most vulnerable and good care staff.'' Diane
