“It's hard not to feel relief my mother passed away before Covid when hearing families heartbreak...”

Added on 17th September 2020

Founder CCFTV Jayne Connery's mother who sadly passed away in November 2019 not long before the Covid19 pandemic outbreak

''It's only since the start of Covid I now feel so fortunate I was allowed to sit in the hospital at the bedside of my sick mother holding her hand for over five weeks before she sadly succumed to Pneumonia. I felt a tsamiami of sadness and grief beyond words when my mother died. I realised quickly she wouldn’t make it back home with me and for the first time I couldn’t make things better for her. I spent most of my time and focus keeping mum safe and well and many of those years I did so when she lived in a care home. I now support families through Care Campaign for the Vulnerable and many tell me of the pain being restricted visiting elderly relatives in care homes - worried loved ones are not coping and unable to comfort with a familiar touch and voice. Hearing this every day is simply heartbreaking. Many families contact us hoping we can provide a positive outcome by writing to the care provider asking to show compassion and allow a family member into their care home. I know in most cases the answer won’t be a positive one but we do this anyway hoping some will get their wish.

''Every daughter, son, family member we support during these times I know how unthinkable it would feel being apart from my own mum in a care home knowing she needed and relied on me more than anyone.'' Jayne Connery Founder Care Campaign for the Vulnerable

The Coronavirus pandemic is bringing so many challenges to everyone and much heartache more then I care to mention here but what is evident is the desperation families feel when kept apart from vulnerable loved ones and to hear this pain is a heavy burden sometimes too hard to bear. It's difficult to admit but only now do I take comfort my mum passed away when she did in November 2019 before Covid pandemic struck. I could never envisage me then looking back and feeling such gratitude I could spend my precious time with her. I do of course feel guilt when the relief pours over me - however, realising I could be a family member forced apart from a loved one in a care home because of Covid there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that would be the very worst thing that could ever possibly happen to me.''

Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is supporting families coming to us saying they now want to have visitation rights to loved ones in care homes. Many are saying relatives particularly living with dementia are suffering without care partners who before Covid visited regularly offering vital support. We are calling for the Government to allow care partners to be tested for Covid alongside residents and staff and to enable our most vulnerable in care homes vital family contact.
