Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is receiving a worrying increase in correspondence telling of 'unfair' evictions from care homes during the coronavirus pandemic. Many families say evictions are served when care complaints are raised and not addressed. Soon after, a shock 28 days notice period would be sent without prior warning and the reason given would be the care home 'can no longer meet care needs.'' We support families where elderly living with Alzheimer's/dementia have been given only SEVEN days to vacate their care home and families are shocked evictions can be served during the coronavirus pandemic placing vulnerable elderly at high risk.
Meetings held with care providers, safeguarding and families we understand notice is often served in the best interest of the resident especially when care needs have increased and staff can no longer deliver the care needed. But we are seeing a worrying trend in what is evidently 'revenge' evictions. One care provider stated in an email one family member had 'broken lockdown rules'' as the reason for serving an eviction on an elderly resident with dementia. Families have reported providers not being 'open and transparent and elderly residents have no rights or support when faced with ''revenge'' evictions.

Revenge evictions happen.
We do accept in many cases we’ve supported, notice to vacate is only served in the best interest of the resident and care homes do all they can to assist. But what happens when this isn’t the case? In a recent meeting, CCFTV attended care professionals including safeguarding concluded the evicting of a frail elderly resident wasn’t in the lady’s best interest. The eviction was upheld by the CEO. In cases such as these, it’s often a battle between provider and family. “We have a duty of care to our staff and residents ‘ is a statement often lamented in meetings when families are unfairly labelled “troublesome”
But what should be scrutinised is a care provider investigating the reason his manager served notice when it’s very clear there is a conflict of interest. Removing a vulnerable elderly person often with dementia to an unfamiliar environment can bring on the decline and a person at a later stage of life should never be faced with such uncertainty. So when some providers say as a response to serving notice “the home can no longer meet the resident's care needs ” we need then, an independent regulatory body to question why?
Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is calling for an independent review on all care home evictions served to vulnerable elderly and far more help for families left without support many telling us including the Care Quality Commission (CQC). One safeguarding professional said '' Some evictions are not served in the best interest of the resident and we are often disappointed with the outcome of the appeal hearings.'' 
Care Campaign for the Vulnerable support families where elderly loved ones are faced with being evicted from their care home. We attend best interest meetings and appeal meetings and believe many notices are served unfairly. We do accept, however, in cases we have previously supported a period of notice is served in the best interest of the resident. We continue to support families that come to us affected by' shock' evictions.
