Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is learning of the pressures faced by conscientious led Care Providers striving to offer a caring and safe environment to both service users and staff. Safety monitoring is proving to be a invaluable care assist tool - bringing a more open and transparent culture into care homes as well as saving valuable resources within the care home sector and the NHS
Gillibrand House, another day another abuse expose. Yet again, a home rated ‘Good’ by the regulator, has produced hidden camera footage of staff mocking residents.https://www-dailymail-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11337295/amp/TikTok-clip-shows-nursing-home-staff-mocking-elderly-patients-wearing-NAPPIES-dancing.html
On this occasion it seems that the purpose of the footage was to support a TikTok craze.
No thought given to embarrassment and complete lack of dignity felt by residents and families who were subjected to this nonsense.
Its beyond frustrating to have been calling for cameras in care homes for some ten years now, only to be repeatedly told that the use of such is heavy handed and unnecessary. Yet this incident proves once again the truth, that care home providers simply do not know what is happening in their homes at all times.
In this example, it’s unlikely this incident would have occurred given the ‘deterrent’ effect that only cameras would have had.
Even if staff had believed it was only fun, recorded footage can also have been used for retraining and supporting disciplinary action.
We have noted an epidemic of abuse reporting recently. How many more vulnerable people have to be abused and humiliated before systems of deterrence and visual recording are mandated for use across a sector that clearly will never willing embrace the much needed change that is needed.
