Care Campaign for the Vulnerable is learning of the pressures faced by conscientious led Care Providers striving to offer a caring and safe environment to both service users and staff. Safety monitoring is proving to be a invaluable care assist tool - bringing a more open and transparent culture into care homes as well as saving valuable resources within the care home sector and the NHS
Care Campaign for the Vulnerable acknowledges the growing trend of families resorting to hidden cameras in their loved one's care. While CCFTV remains steadfast in also promoting positivity within the care industry, we recognise the underlying concerns prompting families to take such drastic measures.
The decision to install hidden cameras stems from a fundamental lack of trust, often fuelled by instances of worry because of neglect or incidents not addressed sufficiently . We empathise with families who grapple with this dilemma daily, weighing the need for oversight against the repercussions of secrecy.
In sharing their experiences, families frequently express frustration at the initial response from care providers when presented with hidden camera footage. Questions arise as to why concerns weren't addressed sooner, leading some to seek resolution through media channels, ultimately impacting the vulnerable individuals at the core of these issues.
On a personal note, I faced similar challenges with my mother's care. Despite attempts to collaborate with the provider for enhanced transparency, overt monitoring was denied, compelling me to resort to hidden camera. Regrettably, this led to my mum’s eviction, highlighting systemic barriers hindering open dialogue with staff and effective resolution, not just for my mum but for other vulnerable residents with no advocate or family..
While some providers embrace choice based overt monitoring, others resist, perpetuating a cycle of mistrust and vulnerability. Recent incidents of hidden camera footage reveals shocking abuse that calls for urgent comprehensive solutions within the care sector.
We advocate for third-party independent monitoring as a proactive approach to safeguarding both provider , residents and staff. By allowing transparency, such initiatives not only protect individuals but also uphold the integrity and reputation of care facilities.
As professionals, it's imperative to recognise the human element within the industry, acknowledging fears and hesitations of frontline workers in reporting misconduct. Third-party monitoring serves as a reassurance, facilitating a collaborative environment conducive to best practices and continuous improvement.
The decision to employ hidden cameras is a last resort, borne out of necessity and a desire for accountability. However, the ramifications of such actions are profound, already indicative of systemic failures. We urge care providers to embrace dialogue and embrace initiatives that prioritise the well-being of those entrusted to their care. We know through collaborative measures with leading providers that the adoption of overt independent monitoring stands as a beacon of progress within the care sector.
Care provider’s currently resisting greater transparency should recognise the protection of the vulnerable must stand as the priority and relieve families of the burden of placing hidden cameras in care.
"The evidence from Providers who have installed CCTV seems to me to merit careful attention and to be quite persuasive"
